Kurz vor Jahresende, an ihrem Geburtstag, veröffentlicht die Londoner Künstlerin Greentea Peng ihre neue Single „Spells“, ein Song, den sie bereits 2018 während der Entstehung ihrer Debüt EP „SENSI“ schrieb. Aber auch im Jahr 2020 war Aria Wells aka Greentea Peng alles andere als untätig. Sie veröffentlichte diverse Singles, wie zuletzt das Reggae-lastige „Revolution“ und das jazzige „Hu Man“, mit dem sie dieses Jahr ihr beeindruckendes Fernsehdebüt bei „Later… with Jools Holland“ gab.
Auf diese Weise beweist Greentea Peng sich innerhalb kürzester Zeit als erstaunlich vielfältige Künstlerin. Das Video zu „Spells“ wurde in South London unter der Regie von Machine Operated gedreht. Den Song beschreibt sie selbst wie folgt:
On a lighter note, to end the year I release spells AKA beg friend. Written around SENSI times, I guess this one explores the idea of tribalism and the want / illusion or desire to please everyone, thus gain acceptance. The process of travelling through that and coming out of the other end rather comfortable in yourself. As someone who has struggled as a yute with wanting to ‘fit in’ this was kind of a final purge of that stage in my ego development. But also its about the idea of casting spells with negative language and behaviours we adopt and use about/ towards our peers. Words are vibrations at the end of the day and it’s called S P E L L I N G for a reason.“
Ihren Künstlernamen wählte Aria übrigens ganz schlicht und ergreifend, weil sie grünen Tee ganz schön gut findet – oder eben „peng“, wie man im Londoner Slang auch sagt. Für 2021 plant sie eine Tour, die sie für einen Termin auch nach Deutschland führen soll, und den Release ihres Debütalbums. Wir sind mehr als gespannt.
