Aktuell gibt es ja noch nicht allzu viele Anlässe, sich aufs nächste Jahr zu freuen. Dass Julien Baker für den 26. Februar 2021 ihr neues Album „Little Oblivions“ angekündigt hat, macht sich entsprechend gut im Kalender. Die erste frisch veröffentlichte Single „Faith Healer“ lässt erahnen, dass es definitiv Grund zur Freude gibt.
Auch wenn „Freude“ hier im weitesten Sinne emotional interpretiert werden sollte. „Faith Healer“ ist, ganz im Stile Julien Bakers, ein kraftvoller, melancholischer Song, in dem die US-amerikanische Songwriterin sich mit dem Thema Abhängigkeit auseinandersetzt:
“I think that „Faith Healer“ is a song about vices, both the obvious and the more insidious ways that they show up in the human experience. I started writing this song 2 years ago and it began as a very literal examination of addiction. For a while, I only had the first verse, which is just a really candid confrontation of the cognitive dissonance a person who struggles with substance abuse can feel– the overwhelming evidence that this substance is harming you, and the counterintuitive but very real craving for the relief it provides. When I revisited the song I started thinking about the parallels between the escapism of substance abuse and the other various means of escapism that had occupied a similar, if less easily identifiable, space in my psyche. There are so many channels and behaviors that we use to placate discomfort unhealthily which exist outside the formal definition of addiction. I (and so many other people) are willing to believe whomever– a political pundit, a preacher, a drug dealer, an energy heale – when they promise healing, and how that willingness, however genuine, might actually impede healing.”
Julien Bakers letztes Album „Turn Out The Light“ erschien 2017. Dazwischen war sie aber alles andere als untätig. Gemeinsam mit ihren wunderbaren Kolleginnen Phoebe Bridgersund Lucy Dacus gründete sie die Supergroup boygenius, als die sie 2018 eine gemeinsame EP veröffentlichten. Zuletzt unterstützten die drei Paramore Frontfrau Hayley Williams auf ihrem Soloalbum „Petals for Armor“.
“Little Oblivions” wurde in Julien Bakers Heimatstadt Memphis, Tennessee, mit dem Tontechniker Calvin Lauber aufgenommen und von Craig Silvey (The National, Florence & the Machine, Arcade Fire) abgemischt. Neben wie bisher Klavier und Gitarre spielte sie darauf Bass, Schlagzeug, Synthesizer, Banjo und Mandoline selbst ein.
