Gerade mal ein Jahr ist es her, dass IDLES ihr drittes Album „Ultra Mono“ veröffentlicht haben, nun kündigt die Post-Punk-Band aus Bristol bereits den Nachfolger an. „CRAWLER“ wird am 12. November 2021 erscheinen. Die Produktion übernahm diesmal, neben IDLES Gitarrist Mark Bowen, der amerikanische Hip Hop Producer Kenny Beats, und nicht nur diese Wahl lässt erahnen, dass die Band auf ihrem vierten Studioalbum sich in mutige, neue Gefilde wagen wird.
Nach dem kompromisslosen auf die Spitze treiben ihres Punk-Sounds, der sich auf „Ultra Mono“ fast schon in Stadion-Rock-Regionen bewegte, verspricht „CRAWLER“ das bisher versatilste IDLES Album zu werden. Die erste Single „The Beachland Ballroom“ (benannt nach dem gleichnamigen Venue in Ohio), gibt hierzu einen ersten, vielversprechenden Vorgeschmack. Zu einem ungewohnter Oldschool-Soul-Vibe wagt Frontmann Joe Talbot auch gesanglich einen neuen Ansatz und zeigt sich verletzlicher denn je. „The Beachland Ballroom“ klingt, als habe er seine oftmals inhaltlich zitierte Liebe zu „Dirty Dancing“ erstmals auch musikalisch ausgelebt und dafür einen ganz eigenen Weg gefunden. Wie Mark Bowen es beschreibt: “I didn’t know Joe could sing like that. He’s been trying to write ‘Be My Baby’ since the very beginning, but he didn’t want to be the punk guy wearing the Motown clothes. He wanted it to feel natural, and this song is.”
Joe Talbot selbst erklärt den Song als die ultimative Huldigung an das, was die Band bis zu diesem Punkt erreicht hat:
„It’s the most important song on the album, really. There’s so many bands that go through the small rooms and dream of making it into the big rooms. Being able to write a soul tune like this made me go, fuck — we’re at a place where we’re actually allowed to go to these big rooms and be creative and not just go through the motions and really appreciate what we’ve got. The song is sort of an allegory of feeling lost and getting through it. It’s one that I really love singing.”
