Spätestens seit dem letzten Sommer dürfte Obongjayar auch der breiten Öffentlichkeit ein Begriff sein. Der in Lagos geborene, in Calabar, Nigeria aufgewachsene und seit seinem 18. Lebensjahr in London lebende Künstler lieh seine Stimme Fred again für dessen Hit „adore u“, dem Obongjayars Song „I Wish It Was Me“ zugrunde liegt.
In seiner Musik vereint Obongjayar diverse Stile, von Soul, Pop, Hip Hop und Electro bis zu Afrobeats. Nun meldet er sich mit gleich zwei Singles zurück, in denen all das komprimiert vereint scheint: Das eher verträumte, soulig-poppige „Just My Luck“ und das von Percussions getriebene „Tomorrow Man“. In beiden Singles geht es inhaltlich um Einsamkeit und Identität. Obongjayar beschreibt „Just My Luck“ selbst wie folgt:
“‘Just My Luck’ is a song about loneliness, about wanting to be a part of a crowd and the fear of missing out. On reflection, not being part of those crowds I so desperately wanted to be, and being absent from whatever it was at the time that would make me feel like the world would end, allowed me to really dig deeper and not only discover myself, but also appreciate my unique self. Because there weren’t any distractions and nothing else to do but be in myself and flesh out the person I eventually became, I also spent that time writing, discovering my voice musically. I guess in some ways using that initial sting as fuel to propel me in self enlightenment! hahaha”
Im Video zu „Just My Luck“, bei dem Uncanny Regie führte, tritt er an der Seite eines Synchronschwimmteams auf und zeigt ganz nebenbei, was für ein charismatischer Peformer er auch ist.
